Josiah was a King who started well, continued well and ended well. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, not turning aside to the right or the left.
Josiah made sure the temple was repaired and that the people were making their offerings and worshipping God. In Josiah's 18th year, the law was found. Though attempts had been made to destroy all the copies of the law of Moses, this copy was buried underneath a paving stone.
The people had gone very far from God, and they had still not yet restored God to His rightful place in their lives. The contents of the law were new to this generation of Israelites who had strayed from God's ways. They had strayed because the Word of the Lord had not been present among them. When people ignore the Word of God, they become defiled and corrupted. We can clearly see that in today's society. If the Word of God is not believed and followed, the consequences are huge - personally, nationally and globally.
If we fear the Lord in a rightful way, we will have a rightful respect and honour for the things that are important to God, one of the most important things being His Word. God has preserved His Word and He has protected its contents. He calls us not to add to it or to take away from it.
Do we truly value the Word of God today? Have we devalued it because it is so easily available to us?
The Word of God changes us and challenges us. It is our living bread. Never underestimate the importance of God's word. Be sure to read it every day. It's no good relying on yesterday's manna. We need to read it, feed on it, believe it and do what it says.
Every Friday morning at Pierrepont (Home of NETS) we come together as a community to worship together, take communion and to feed on the word of God. Here you can listen to these Friday Sermons and discover what God is doing among us.
